Although I don't have a macro-specific lens, the 70-300mm Canon works well with a close up ring on the front. The only problem is you can't get very close and "focusing" is done by moving an inch closer or further away. It seems when I'm not "seeing" well, I just need to focus on the smallest of things.
Or..when in doubt, make a few pictures of flowers. ;)
