That said, I just don't think managing for one species above all else is very smart. Deer bring in lots of $ for sure, but at a pretty big cost to other things. Again, it's priorities. When I see the asinine comments on some forums about predators, it's clear they either don't have a clue (biologically) or they have no interest in other user groups (stake holders). This is clear in the wolf advisory committee. The DNR secretary admitted this.

In the last couple deer mortality studies in N W and EC WI and in the UP, bear take far more deer than wolves. Wolves put a pretty small dent in the population compared to us, winters, cars, bears, coyotes bobcats...then wolves (in that order). But deer and bear bring in more revenue and affect people in different ways than wolves do. Sport, revenue, tradition, etc.
As for public opinion dictating animal population vs balancing all the pros and cons about the correct amount of wolves, deer or bears in a modern society, it's different now then when Daniel Boone was out in the wilderness. As with most issues, if both sides are a bit pissed off, that's probably the correct position, or in this case, correct amount. Thanks for the discussion.mark scotchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14834584120583645550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6333510981317581327.post-17014254694928043772015-03-06T07:46:06.625-06:002015-03-06T07:46:06.625-06:00The same could be asked about deer. Deer are alre...The same could be asked about deer. Deer are already having a major impact on forest understory and changing plant life in N Wi. Hunters (like myself) will always want more deer, but more deer is not always a good thing. Some hunters now think that every season should be like it was in the 90s, but the herd then was way over capacity. We will never had deer hunting in WI like it was then. So my belief is we manage WI wildlife with deer as king-we manage for one species irregardless of everything else. Many hunters demand this. Personally I don't think that is a good thing. Wolves belong here and will self regulate their populations and we should be able to support 1000. It's curious, as I've written a few times, how the bear gets a free pass. There are over 22,000 black bear in the state. They cause much more damage to personal property, ag and even injury than the wolf. So why? Why the bias? Yogi bear vs. the big bad wolf? Yep. It's all based of folklore and fear. Also, the WBHA has so much political power, any threat to their sport (over all others) is squashed. Look at who wrote the wolf hunt bill...it was written by the WBHA and handed off to Suder. Look, when an extensive survey of WI residents inside and outside wolf habitat express a desire to have current populations (660) or larger, then the DNR and our politicians should listen. I am a consumer of the outdoors (a hunter, fisherman) but I also believe non-consumers should have a say (birders, recreations etc). In the current DNR and most recent political actions largely ignore non-consumers. That's not right.NHS Digital Photographyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08693313575058227744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6333510981317581327.post-178893306878732952015-03-03T09:17:57.020-06:002015-03-03T09:17:57.020-06:00Science or not, should the question be how many wo...Science or not, should the question be how many wolves can be supported or how many wolves should be supported taking into account so many of the competing variables?mark scotchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14834584120583645550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6333510981317581327.post-33907001032756703542015-03-03T09:05:15.791-06:002015-03-03T09:05:15.791-06:00The 350 number back in 1999 was based on best avai...The 350 number back in 1999 was based on best available science at the time-the thinking being the species would find habitat only in the N forest. Since then, most new studies show that Wi could support up to 1000 and they can do quite well in the central forest region. That said, the populations started to level off (on their own) when they reached 800 (prior to the first hunt in 2012). Biologists now believe the population would settle into that range (500-800) and not grow much past that-no matter what barstool scientists say. There is a lot of criticism of the DNR and their population counts on wolves, but having been involved in it now, I can say they are very accurate. The volunteer counters and the radio telemetry result in a very solid population count. Hunters (I am one-deer) and others (hounders) can give a very inflated opinion on how many are out there, but one or two wolves can leave a hell of a lot of tracks over a great deal of territory.NHS Digital Photographyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08693313575058227744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6333510981317581327.post-91716136751001019292015-02-23T16:50:33.221-06:002015-02-23T16:50:33.221-06:00thanks. if I remember, there was around 900 a year...thanks. if I remember, there was around 900 a year or so ago and had quite a number of people up in arms and the proposed target tossed out there when the whole wolf re-intorduction began was around 3-400? so, somewhere around 600 is seems like a reasonable target to allow for the flucuations without upsetting too many folks? mark scotchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14834584120583645550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6333510981317581327.post-90706739680012752032015-02-23T09:55:23.885-06:002015-02-23T09:55:23.885-06:00660 last winter. I got a decent 2 1/2 year old six-pointer up in Ashland County this year, my first shooter in 2 years of hunting dawn to dark every day, and a bunch of archery season. With the last two tough winters, the hunting north of Highway 8 is even tougher than it is around you.

Curious if you use your fatbike to get out into the woods when hunting. I have about a 2 mile walk from our shack in the woods to my stand, so I really like using my Schlick to get out there. I typically am sitting in my stand before it is light enough to hunt, so walking in has no advantage. Besides, I think the rolling bike spooks fewer deer.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17997301658402528835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6333510981317581327.post-38090507859222809942014-08-21T07:39:56.746-05:002014-08-21T07:39:56.746-05:00The tracks are so comforting to see….amongst all t...The tracks are so comforting to see….amongst all the chaos within which they live.Melanie Weberghttp://wildlifepublictrustcoexistence.comnoreply@blogger.com
